A good lid is essential for some recipes, but many skillets are sold without lids. And finding a snug-fitting one for both 10- and 12-inch pans can be a challenge. We tested six universal lids to find the best. Each was evaluated by material, fit, design, venting and oven safety. We also judged quality, ease of use and how well each lid retained moisture during cooking.

Our top choice was the Kuhn Rikon Smart Lid ($40.25). It delivered excellent water retention, cooked rice evenly and sealed tightly thanks to its silicone edge. We especially liked the adjustable steam vent for better control during cooking. It’s also oven-safe. The only drawback? The vent mechanism can loosen over time and takes extra effort to clean.

A close runner-up was the Made In Frying Pan Silicone Universal Lid ($99). This heavy-duty lid formed a tight seal and performed beautifully. However, it is noticeably heavy and prone to condensation buildup, which can drip when lifted.

We also recommend the Hestan Stainless Steel Universal Lid ($90), which is well-constructed and oven-safe. Its main weakness was a narrower diameter and the lack of a silicone rim, which led to a looser fit on wider skillets.

Mid-pack performers included models from RSVP International and Henckels, which felt sturdy but allowed too much steam to escape and didn’t seal tightly. The Ecolution Universal Lid—a best-seller online—was our lowest scorer. It’s not oven-safe, the venting released too much steam and it never formed a firm seal.
