Muddling—using a thick baton-like tool or spoon to lightly crush ingredients—helps extract flavorful essential oils and juices. In this recipe, we muddle fresh rosemary and cranberries with a bit of sugar, then add additional cranberry juice for color and sweetness to balance the gin. Also try this cocktail with vodka.

Ingredients
  • 2

    small sprigs fresh rosemary

  • 6

    fresh cranberries

  • 1

    teaspoon white sugar

  • 2

    ounces gin

  • 1 ½

    ounces cranberry juice

  • Ice

In a cocktail shaker, combine 1 sprig rosemary, the cranberries and sugar. Muddle until the cranberries are broken down.

Add the gin and juice, then fill the shaker with ice. Shake vigorously for 15 seconds, then strain into a chilled coupe glass.

Garnish with the remaining rosemary sprig.
