In this video, Chris, Matt and cookbook author Brendan Liew visit Sumomo Bakery's Shibuya location. Sumomo specializes in hand-kneaded breads and pastries, with everything made from scratch every day. Rather than a typical pastry case, the shop displays their goods in baskets, trays and bowls arranged on long, open tables; customers use small wooden tongs to make their selections.
The group browses the offerings, which include sweet and savory treats. There are pastries in fun shapes like turtles and smiling faces, buns filled with hojicha and blueberry cream, huge round mochi and even bread filled with yakisoba. Their picks include a French toast stick, a sugared round croissant, a milk bun and a curry bun. Brendan translates signage as needed to guide Chris and Matt's selections.
