Onigiri

Onigiri

Known as "the sandwich of Japan," onigiri are small balls made from seasoned rice wrapped around strongly flavored ingredients like fish, meat and pickled vegetables. They're often wrapped with nori sheets, making a perfectly portable, handheld snack.

On a 2025 trip to Japan, Chris Kimball and Matt Card had onigiri as part of a typical breakfast spread, prepared for them by a home cook named Akahori and her Australian husband Rupert. These onigiri were filled with intensely savory miso pork and wrapped with nori.
